Bumetanide Alleviates Epileptogenic and Neurotoxic Effects of Sevoflurane in Neonatal Rat Brain
Edwards, David A.; Shah, Hina P.; Cao, Wengang; Gravenstein, Nikolaus; Seubert, Christoph N.; Martynyuk, Anatoly E.
Anesthesiology. 112(3):567-575, March 2010.
doi: 10.1097/ALN.0b013e3181cf9138
Sevoflurane has been reported to cause epileptiform electroencephalographic activity and seizure-like movements. Because of concerns for neonatal anesthetic toxicity, the authors tested the hypothesis that sevoflurane induced seizures and neurotoxicity may be diminished by the Na+K+2Cl− cotransporter 1 inhibitor, bumetanide. During anesthesia maintenance with sevoflurane, the electroencephalography exhibited distinctive episodes of epileptic seizures in 40% of rats from postnatal days 4 through 8. Bumetanide decreased seizures in these rats. These results support the possibility that excitatory output of sevoflurane-potentiated γ-aminobutyric acid type A/glycine systems may contribute to epileptogenic and neurotoxic effects in early postnatal rats.

Mechanisms of Vascular Disease: A Textbook for Vascular Surgeons (Hardcover)

December 4, 2009

ISBN: 0521860636
Publisher : Cambridge University Press Author:

This textbook provides an up-to-date account of the mechanisms and pathophysiology of vascular disease, and the current treatment options open to vascular surgeons. As the scientific basis of vascular disease advances rapidly, it is critical that clinicians have access to relevant information written specifically forvascular surgeons . This account reviews the impact of these scientific advances on established and emerging treatment options. Experts from Australia, North America and Europe have contributed to basic topics such as atherosclerosis, restenosis, thrombosis and hemostasis, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, sepsis, vascular hemodynamics and wound healing. More applied topics such as pain syndromes in vascular surgery and the diabetic foot are also covered in this textbook. This will be a core text for all vascular surgical trainees and is especially appropriate for advanced trainees and consultants wishing to refresh their knowledge base.

Vascular Surgery (Oxford Specialist Handbooks Series in Surgery)

November 26, 2009
ISBN: 0199203083
ISBN 13: 9780199203086
Author: Linda Hands
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Number of Pages: 640
Publication Date: 2007-09-06

Product Description: This book is designed to meet the needs of the vascular trainee. It can be carried in the pocket for easy access and provides practical advice on all commonly encountered peripheral vascular problems. It focuses on surgical detail, but also carried background information on presentation and details on preoperative investigation and postoperative management. The book gives relevant information for use when seeking patient consent. Each operation carries an OPCS code, increasingly important in recording surgical activity.
Alternative interventions are given, including both radiological procedures and medical management where appropriate; an important approach given the evolving vascular specialist who has responsibility in all three fields. It informs the vascular trainee from their earliest encounter with the area to those completing their fellowship. It should also be of interest to the PRHO on the vascular ward, the specialist vascular nurse, the vascular anaesthetist, the intensivist and the vascular radiologist.
